Schedule of Events

 

 

Program:  The first annual Pacific Coast Undergraduate Mathematics Conference will be held at Occidental College in Los Angeles on Saturday, March 25th, 2006.

 

8:00-8:30 - Registration and light continental breakfast.

8:30-9:45 - Student Talk Sessions

Four 15-minute talks per session (with 5 minute breaks).  Concurrent sessions will be organized by topic if necessary.

 
9:45-10:00 - Coffee break.

10:00-10:45 - Panel Discussion about REU and summer opportunities for undergraduates. 

Three panelists will be invited to speak:  one will be a student who has attended an REU to speak about his or her personal experience, one will be a professor to speak about opportunities for women and one will be a professor to speak about general summer REU opportunities.  The panelists will be asked to address how to find an REU, what the application process entails, what to expect from an REU, how students support themselves via stipends, how much stipends are, how long the programs last, what happens afterward and why students would want to do an REU.

 
11:00-12:00 - Freshman/Sophomore Talk Sessions

Three 15-minute talks per session (with 5 minute breaks).  These sessions will be devoted to freshman and sophomore speakers.  Concurrent sessions will be organized by topic.

 
12:00-1:00 - Lunch

We will be providing all participants with lunch. As part of the lunch events, we will provide all participants the opportunity to vote for the winners of the Math Photo Contest.  For more information about the photo contest, please visit the Math Photo Contest page.  

 
1:00-2:00 - Keynote Speaker. 

This year's Keynote Speaker will be Dr. Jennifer Quinn from Occidental College/University of Puget Sound.  Dr. Quinn is also the new Executive Director for the Association for Women in Mathematics.  For more information about Dr. Quinn, please go to the Featured Speaker page.

 
2:15-3:00 - Panel Discussion about career opportunities.

We will feature panelists from local businesses and companies who earned a math degree in college.

 
3:00-3:15 - Afternoon break with refreshments.
 
3:15-3:45 - Prize Session with refreshments.

During the prize session, we will announce the winners of the Math Photo Contest. In addition, we will be recognizing student speakers and raffling off some prizes for students.

 
3:45-4:45 - Student Talk Sessions

Three 15-minutes talks per session (with 5 minute breaks).  Concurrent sessions will be organized by topic if necessary.
