The main part of the morning's activities at
Pepperdine Math Day will be a 1½ hour written mathematics exam.
A variety of prizes will be awarded to top scorers.
Other useful information:
- The exam will not assume any knowledge of Calculus, but will include questions that depend on
knowledge of the concepts found in classes that precede Calculus (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, etc.),
as well as a selection of elementary questions from number theory, combinatorics, probability and so on.
In general, the exam will not test students' knowledge so much as it will test their ability to think
carefully and creatively.
- There will be no use of calculators or any other tool or aid.
- The exam will consists of several multiple choice questions (the exact number is still being determined).
- There will be no penalty for incorrect answers.
- Pencils and scratch paper will be provided--you simply need to show up to take the exam.
- Students should bring some sort of picture ID in order to verify winners' identities.
You can look at the 2006 exam and the 2008 exam.
(Math Day 2007 was canceled due to wild fires, thus there is no 2007 exam.)
Here are a few of old/sample exams from three other schools which also hold math days:
    Sample 1
    Sample 2
    Sample 3.
