Requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

For the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, a student must pass the following:

Lower-division Courses (26 units)
Offered once or twice a year

MATH 110Colloquium in Mathematics1 unit
Math 210Calculus I4 units
Math 211Calculus II4 units
Math 212Calculus III4 units
COSC 105Introduction to Programming3 units
PHYS 210Physics I5 units
PHYS 211Physics II5 units

Sophomore upper-division courses (8 units)
Offered once a year

Junior/Senior upper-division courses (12 units)
Offered once every 2 years

Math 430Algebraic Structures I4 units
Math 431Algebraic Structures II4 units
Math 530Real Analysis4 units

Select two additional upper-division courses (7-8)
Offered once every 2 years
Others may be available occasionally

Math 531Complex Analysis4 units
Math 510Probability4 units
Math 511Statistics4 units
Math 340Differential Equations3 units
Math 540Dynamical Systems and Chaos4 units
Math 420Foundations of Mathematics4 units

Common substitutions:
Students wishing to obtain a computer science major or minor typically substitute CoSc 220 and 221 for CoSc 105.

Recommended schedule for first two years:

YearFallSpring

1stCalculus ICalculus II
ColloquiumComp. Sci. 105

2ndCalculus IIILinear Algebra
Trans. to Abstr. Math

Or if entering with AP Calculus credit:
YearFallSpring

1stCalculus IICalculus III
ColloquiumComp. Sci. 105

2ndPhysics ILinear Algebra
Trans. to Abstr. MathPhysics II

Note that Math 360: Transitions to Abstract Mathematics, is a prerequisite for all upper-division courses. Since upper-division courses are offered every other year, students will generally need to take some in their Junior, and some in their Senior year. For this reason, it is extremely important for mathematics majors to take Math 360 during the Fall of their sophomore year if they hope to graduate in four years.
